Historical Note

Upon the arrival of millions of Catholic immigrants to the U.S. in the nineteenth-century, Protestant-dominated America was largely anti-Catholic. This anti-Catholicism became particularly pronounced after the 1840s, when millions of Catholics migrated from Ireland to the U.S. Fearing young Catholics would not become proper Americans if they were educated in parochial schools, most states passed constitutional amendments forbidding tax money be used to fund parochial schools in the 1880s.

Nonetheless, by 1890 the American Catholic Church had an extensive network of parishes and parochial schools across the urban Northeast and Midwest. Catholic ethnic groups looked to these schools to protect and enrich their religion and culture. In 1904, Catholic educators formed an organization to coordinate their efforts on a national scale via the Catholic Education Association, later the National Catholic Educational Association. Priorities in the classrooms included piety and discipline in addition to knowledge. Few of the teachers, mostly religious sisters, were well educated. By 1912, however, led by Catholic University, many Catholic colleges began summer training institutes in pedagogical techniques. Massive expansion resulted by 1920 in over six thousand elementary schools, fifteen hundred high schools, nearly two million students, and forty thousand teachers. By the 1960s enrollment peaked with over four million elementary school and one million high school students. This declined after the Second Vatican Council as Catholics emerged from their urban ghettos, moved to the suburbs, and went to public schools. At the same time, many teaching nuns left their orders so that many schools closed or replaced their teachers with better paid lay persons and these schools began to charge higher tuitions as they evolved into elite alternatives to public schools.

One aspect of the growth of Catholic schooling was the Catholic educational publishing industry. The Young Catholic Messenger was the inaugural publication of the Pflaum Publishing Company, founded in 1885 in Dayton, Ohio, by George Pflaum, Sr. Pflaum produced religious and civic themed reading materials distributed to students in the Catholic parochial schools that later included the Junior Catholic Messenger, Our Little Messenger, and the Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact. In the early years the issues tended to be shorter and more literary in focus, while later on the number of pages per issue increased as more news and current events were included. The Young Catholic Messenger ceased publication in 1970, two years before Treasure Chest.

Scope and Contents

This is primarily a collection of mostly bound volumes of the premiere publication of Pflaum Publishing of Dayton, Ohio.

The first series constitutes the bulk of the collection with a run of The Young Catholic Messenger from 1891, 1909, 1913-1914, and 1926 through the end of publication in 1970, in boxes 1-12. It was published during the calendar year, January to December, through 1925, going from twenty four issues a year to thirty two. In 1926 they published a shortened volume, number 42, January - June, with twenty four issues (again). This was followed by volume 42 with forty issues and aligned to the academic school year, September 1926 - June 1927. This was cut back to May in 1934-1935 and the issues numbers steadily declined until publication ceased in 1970, going down to thirty eight issues in 1931-1932, thirty seven in 1934-1935, thirty six in 1940-1941, thirty five in 1943-1944, thirty four in 1944-1945, thirty three in 1957-1958, thirty two in 1961-1962, and only twenty eight in the last year of 1969-1970.

The second series is one folder of random issues from 1960-1962, in box 12, of the Junior Catholic Messenger, a satellite publication of The Young Catholic Messenger.
