Title: Co-Workers of Mother Teresa in America Records
Dates: 1954-2000
Extent: 27 linear feet; 41 boxes
Abstract: Inspired by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, the American Co-Workers were inaugurated in New York City in 1971 as an affiliate to the Missionaries. Membership was ecumenical and efforts focused on administering to the poor in areas where the Missionaries of Charity were not present. Prayer, visitation, and a helpful hand were the emphasis and a series of regional and national links were established and maintained with other contemplative orders. The American Co-Workers records at CUA are those of Vi Collins while serving as Regional Link, a National Link, and International Speaker/Councillor of the Co-Workers to the Missionaries of Charity. Later additions to the collection include materials donated by Victoria Schmidt and Diane Hattery, fellow Co-Workers. The collection consists of correspondence, financial ledgers, meetings materials, the Co-Worker Newsletter, newspaper clippings, photographs, and audio tapes and film reels accumulated during their forty year association with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity.
Collection Number: ACUA 166
Language: English

Historical Note

Blessed Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 to alleviate the suffering of the poor of Calcutta, India. Influenced and inspired by this, the American Co-Workers were inaugurated in New York City in 1971 as an affiliate to the Missionaries. Representatives from four states and Washington, DC were present. Mrs. Warren Kump was named National Chairman and Vi Collins, one of Mother Teresa's original Co-Workers in Calcutta, was named Chairman of the Washington area. Membership was ecumenical and efforts focused on administering to the poor in areas where the Missionaries of Charity were not present. Prayer, visitation, and a helpful hand were the emphasis and a series of regional and national links were established and maintained with other contemplative orders.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata (1910-1997) was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 27, 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia. A precociously spiritual child, by the age of 18, she joined the Loreto nuns of Ireland, an order with a presence in Calcutta. After a brief postulancy in Ireland, she was sent to India in 1929 to teach in the order's St. Mary's High School in Calcutta. However, in 1946, after experiencing what she would later describe as a "day of decision," Teresa was inspired to live outside the cloister and to work directly with the poor. Building upon this initial inspiration, the Missionaries of Charity slowly emerged over the next four years.

In the subsequent decades, Teresa's initial vision for her order would expand. The Co-Workers of Mother Teresa was established in the late 1950's to unite laymen and women across the globe in supporting and expanding the Missionaries' mission of aiding the sick and poor. Having established her first non-Indian house in Venezuela in 1965, the Missionaries of Charity was also blessed as an order of pontifical right in the same year. As her fame grew outside her adopted homeland, invitations and honors began to flood into the otherwise shy nun's community in Calcutta. Having achieved worldwide recognition for her work, and the press that came with winning the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Teresa traveled the world, speaking on the issues of the day and establishing new communities of both the Missionaries of Charity and the Co-Workers. She would continue in this pattern throughout the final years of her life, before passing away on September 5, 1997.

While the American branch of the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa was formally founded in 1971, the history of the Co-Workers themselves stretches back to the early years of Teresa's activities. The first Co-Worker was Jacqueline de Decker, a Belgian sister, who had come to Calcutta to work with the poor and sick. With a shared passion for helping the destitute, the Teresa and her first met in 1948. De Decker sought entry into the Missionaries of Charity, but a debilitating spinal disease forced her to return to Belgium. Maintaining correspondence, however, Teresa encouraged her to become "spiritually bound" to the Missionaries of Charity, by "adopting" a Sister to pray and write with. From this initial bond between two friends, the Sick and Suffering Co-Workers emerged by 1953, with material and moral support for the Missionaries coming from individuals across Europe.

Meanwhile, in 1954, a group of European women residing in Calcutta, including Ann Blaikie, paid a visit to Mother Teresa. After their initial donation of Christmas clothing for impoverished children, Teresa continued to call upon these women for further work with the children. Inspired, this informal group quickly titled itself the "Marian Society" and expanded to include Indians and non-Catholics alike.

In the early 1960s, after Blaikie had moved back to the United Kingdom, she was able to reunite with many of the former members of the Marian Society now residing back in Britain. While providing a monthly meeting space for prayer and reflection, this group also worked to raise funds for Mother Teresa's work back in India. Similar organizations also began emerging across Europe, as former Marian Society affiliates returned to their home countries. Impressed by their work, and borrowing Mahatma Gandhi's expression for his helpers, Mother Teresa dubbed these groups her "Co-Workers." She also began to advocate for the formation of an international association to unite the work of the disparate organizations.

In March, 1969, Mother Teresa summoned representatives from the various national societies to Rome to draft a constitution that would govern the new International Association of Co-Workers. With the daunting task of finding a spiritually-acceptable set of guidelines that would speak to all nationalities, faiths, and peoples, the Co-Workers wrestled for two days over the matter. Finally, on March 26, the Constitution of the International Association of Co-Workers of Mother Teresa was presented to Pope Paul VI and received his blessing.

After the Constitution's blessing, a flurry of formal foundations of national branches occurred, with the American branch organizing in 1971. An informal Co-Workers organization in the United States can be traced back as early as 1960 with the National Council of Catholic Women's fundraising efforts for the Missionaries of Charity. Women such as Eileen Egan and Vi Collins, both of whom had spent time in Calcutta working alongside Mother Teresa, had also brought the spirit of the Co-Worker movement back to the United States. However, it was not until Patricia Kump, inspired by news stories of Teresa's work, became involved that a formal organization in the United States was called for. Connecting with Eileen Egan of New York City and Vi and Frank Collins of Washington, DC, they formally established the American Co-Workers in New York City in 1971.

Over the 1970s and 1980s, the work of the Co-Workers across the world would grow to include not only fundraising, local prayer groups, and newsletters, but also active ministry to the poor and sick wherever they may be. At its core, the organization came to not just support, but supplement the work of the Missionaries.

Finally, in 1994, Mother Teresa surprised the Co-Workers with a sudden call for the dissolution of the formal international organization and its national affiliates. With the sharp increase of Missionaries the world over and concern that the Co-Workers were becoming too institutionalized, Teresa wished to encourage her helpers to return to their grass-roots origins. So, in 1994, the American Co-Workers, alongside its sister organization across the globe, formally disbanded. However, while there is no longer a formal association, the work of the Co-Workers still remains - and indeed, the name is still deployed.

Scope and Contents

The Co-Workers of Mother Teresa in America records spans the years 1962-1994 and reflects much of the work of Mrs. Collins, her fellow American Co-Workers, the International Co-Workers, and the Missionaries of Charity. At the suggestion of Eileen Egan - who had previously donated her Mother Teresa collection to the CUA Archives - the records were initially donated by Mrs. Collins in 1996, followed by supplemental donations by Victoria Schmidt in 1998, and Diane Hattery in 2002. It primarily includes financial records, correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and audio-visual materials. The collection is divided into nine series.

Series 1, Subject Files (A-Z), 1969-1994, is alphabetically arranged in Boxes 1-8. It consists of a variety of materials and topics spanning Mrs. Collin's involvement with Mother Teresa, the Missionaries of Charity, and the Co-Workers. Within this series, there exists correspondence and materials related to several prominent members of the Co-Workers and Missionaries of Charity, a collection of the Co-Worker and Missionaries documents, and materials pertaining to events and trips organized by the Co-Workers.

Series 2, Correspondence, 1968-1994, arranged alphabetically and chronologically, is located in Boxes 8-13. It includes correspondence between Mrs. Collins and the various national and international officers of the Co-Workers, inquiries written to the Co-Workers and Missionaries, and exchanges between the Co-Workers and Missionary sisters and brothers. This series also contains a small collection of photocopied letters from Mother Teresa to the American Co-Workers.

Series 3, Newsletters/Letters, 1972-1993, is located in Boxes 13-17. Arranged chronologically, this series is divided into two subseries: US Co-Workers in Boxes 13-16; and International Co-Workers in Boxes 16-17. Both subseries contains copies of Co-Worker newsletters, materials that went into the creation of the newsletters, and organizational letters sent to Co-Worker officers. In the US Co-Workers subseries, the materials are organized chronological with a focus on materials pertaining to the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa in the United States. The second subseries focuses on newsletters and letters pertaining to both the International Association of Co-Workers as well as the Co-Worker chapters located in nations outside the United States.

Series 4, Finances, 1971-1992, is housed in Boxes 18-27. It is divided into two subseries: Ledgers in Boxes 18-22; and Financial Documentation in Boxes 23-27. The Ledgers subseries, organized chronologically, includes the financial ledgers recording the donations, expenses, and reimbursements of the American Co-Workers. The Financial Documentation subseries, organized alphabetically and chronologically, contains annual financial reports, incorporation information, receipts, and tax returns.

Series 5, Meetings, 1971-1990, is organized chronologically in Boxes 27-29. This series holds the organizational records, minutes, and correspondence pertaining to a variety of regional, national, and international meeting of the Co-Workers from Minneapolis to Rome.

Series 6, Publicity/Clippings, 1962-1994, is arranged alphabetically and chronologically in Boxes 30-32. This series consists exclusively primarily of newspaper and magazine clippings detailing the life and work of Mother Teresa, the Missionaries, and the Co-Workers.

Series 7, AV/Materials, 1969-1991, is located in Boxes 33-40. It is divided into three subseries: Photographs in Box 33; Audio-Cassettes in Boxes 33-37; and Film Reels in Boxes 38-40. The Photograph subseries, organized alphabetically, includes a variety of images highlighting the work of the Missionaries and Co-Workers in the United States. It also includes images and negatives of Mrs. Collins, Mother Teresa, and Brother Andrew. The Audio-Cassettes subseries is organized chronologically. It primarily consists of audio recordings of Co-Worker meetings, including speeches given by Mother Teresa. Finally, the Film Reel subseries consists of visual recordings of Mother Teresa's speeches, as well films detailing her life and works.

Series 8, Museum Collection, 1975, 1986, is organized chronologically in Box 41. This series is composed of FAO-issued Mother Teresa commemorative medals and sari-themed Co-Worker buttons, including information about both items. Due to the sensitivity of these items, access is restricted.

Series 6, Mother Teresa Original Letters, 1974-1981, is an assembled collection of materials handwritten or signed by Mother Teresa. The materials in this collection, primarily handwritten correspondence to the American Co-Workers, were identified and removed from the main body of the collection. Photocopies of these documents were then placed in their original locations. Due to the sensitivity of these documents, access is restricted.

Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

Vi Collins donated most of the assembled records to the American Catholic History Research Center in 1996. Supplemental donations were made by Victoria Schmidt in 1998 and Diane Hattery in 2002.

Processing Information

Upon an initial survey, the collection consisted of a mix of unprocessed newsletters, newspaper clippings, correspondence, audio-cassettes, and financial records. A random assortment of the photographic material, as well as all the audio-cassettes and film reels, had also been separated from the main body of the collection. Most of the existing folders were unlabeled, with unrelated documents often mixed together.

Where clear listings were available, the series headings and folder titles were maintained, except to place the folders in chronological or alphabetical order, as applicable. All the folders were replaced with acid-free ones, all metal clips showing signs of decay were replaced with plastic-coated ones, and the majority of the collection was moved to new letter-size document boxes.

The Co-Workers newsletters and letters were separated and organized chronologically. In addition, excess copies of both were weeded out of the collection to reduce clutter.

The photographic material, which had been removed from the main body of the collection and placed in unlabeled folders, was also rearranged thematically and alphabetically and reintegrated with the collection. All photographs and negatives were also sleeved for protection. The audiocassettes and film reels were likewise reintegrated into the collection.

The museum items - the FAO-issued medallions and Co-Workers buttons - were removed from the main body of the collection and organized into their own series (Series 8).

The correspondence was reorganized chronologically, while adhering to the original thematic headings. All handwritten materials from Mother Teresa, including correspondence and autographed documents, were replaced with photocopies in the main collection. The handwritten materials were then organized into a new series field (Series 9), with restricted access.

Processing completed in 2013 by Shane T. MacDonald. EAD markup completed in 2013 by Shane T. MacDonald.
