Biographical Note

Charles Warren Currier (1857-1918) was a Roman Catholic cleric and polymath with an international reputation as a scholar and orator. He worked to further Pan-American relations and was an advocate to improve the situation of American Indians.

Currier was born on March 22, 1857 in the Diocese of Roseau on St. Thomas, then part of the Danish West Indies and currently part of the United States Virgin Islands. His father was Warren Green Currier of New York City and his mother, Deborah Heyliger of the Netherlands. Young Currier was raised on St. Eustatius and St. Kitts before being sent at age fourteen to the Netherlands for education at the College of Our Lady of the Assumption in Roemond, Limburg. He joined the Redemptorist order on May 24, 1874, and professed on May 25, 1875. He taught classes while also earning a Ph.D. in Religious Philosophy at the Redemptorist Seminary at Wittem in 1877. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Amsterdam on November 22, 1880 by Bishop Henry Schaap, C.Ss.R., Vicar Apostolic of Dutch Guiana (now Surinam) in South America. Currier then served as a missionary in Dutch Guiana, 1881-1882. He then toured the United States, preaching to large crowds in Boston, New York City, and Baltimore.

Currier left the Redemptorists in November 1891 and thereafter did missionary and pastoral work for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He wrote and published widely in books and periodicals and worked as a foreign news correspondent. Among his books were the History of Religious Orders and a novel, Dimitrios and Irene, both published in 1894. The latter brought on an unsubstantiated charge of plagiarism from former Civil War general and author Lew Wallace (of Ben Hur fame) who had recently published a similar novel, Prince of India, that was also about the fall of Byzantium.

Currier was a strong promoter of education, founding a Catholic Summer School in Maryland in 1900 that was later absorbed into the Cliff Haven Summer School of New York at Plattsburgh. Serving as the pastor of St. Mary's in Washington, 1900-1905, he fostered better understanding among Spanish speaking countries, presenting papers at the International Congress of Americanists representing The Catholic University of America, The Smithsonian, and the United States government. The State Department sent him as a delegate to the independence celebrations in 1910 of both Argentina and Mexico.

Currier was appointed Assistant Director of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions in 1905. He lectured and published to raise money and promote awareness of problems plaguing native peoples. He was especially concerned about conditions of schools on Indian reservations. He worked to end corruption and raise mission funds with Charles J. Bonaparte, Secretary of the Navy under President Theodore Roosevelt, who also served as a legal counsel to the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. At Currier's behest prominent citizens in various cities established branches of the Marquette League for Indian Support. His eulogy of a famous chief, Hollow Horn Bear, given at St. Paul's Church in Washington, was published in The Indian Sentinel in 1914.

Currier was appointed Bishop of Zamboanga, Philippines, on June 25, 1910 by Pope Pius X. Unfamiliar with the Philippines, he declined. However, given his familiarity and sympathy for South America he accepted his April 26, 1913 appointment as the first Bishop of Matanzas, Cuba. He was consecrated in Rome on July 6, 1913 and arrived in Matanzas on November 3, 1913. While there he repaired and redecorated the dilapidated Cathedral of San Carlos. Due to his poor health he resigned his position as Bishop on February 11, 1914, and was appointed Titular Bishop of Hetalonia on June 15, 1915. He died on September 23, 1918, on a train traveling in Maryland from Waldorf to Baltimore to assist in the funeral of Cardinal John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York. His funeral took place in the Baltimore Cathedral, where he is also buried.

Scope and Contents

The Currier papers were loosely organized by Archives staff in the 1950s, with folder numbers assigned apparently at random. These numbers are included in the folder listing note field when available and original folder titles have been retained, as much as possible.

The first series is General Correspondence, 1856-1918, and undated, in boxes 1-3. This is primarily chronological with a few files by subject mixed in. They are mostly in English though some are in French. A wide range of persons and topics covered, including family, publishers, churchmen, businessmen, and politicians.

The second series is Legal and Ecclesiastical Files, 1857-1918, in box 3. These include certificates from various civil and religious institutions. For example, some are for donation to the Library of Congress and Smithsonian Institution and others from the U.S. State Department confirming his delegate status to various meetings and conferences. There are also legal contracts, Currier's vital statistics, miscellaneous petitions, and various types of documentation related to his Cuban bishopric.

The third series is Addresses, Lectures, and Sermons, 1881-1918, and undated, in boxes 4-7. These are mainly handwritten drafts, though some are typewritten, of addresses, lectures, and sermons that also include notes.

The fourth series is Writings, 1856-1915, and undated, in boxes 7-13. These include drafts, notes, and some print copies, including books, for his various writings, be they fictional, historical, or spiritual. Some are specifically listed as being 'poetry' or 'short stories,' but the vast majority simply as 'manuscripts.' Loose and bound published versions of many of these are in box 12. Single quotation marks are used for titles that are definitely listed on the manuscript and not used if the title actually came from the old folder title.

The fifth series is Reference Material, 1888-1917 and undated, in box 14. This is a miscellaneous selection of news clippings and other printed material, some personal and some topical.

The sixth and final series is Photographs and Memorabilia, ca. 1870-1918 and undated, in boxes 15-16. Numbered photographs and print items, loose postcards, calling cards, scrapbooks, and official seals. The photographs include many portraits of Currier as well as many unidentified young ladies. The illustrated print items in box 15 are black and white and appear to have been cut from magazines. Some postcards are photographs of his friends and acquaintances, with some of religious sites and scenes.

The last series also has a notable collection of 101 postcards of Indian tribes of South America titled La Coleccion Boggiani de Tipos indigenas de Sudamerica Central by Robert Lehmann-Nitsche, Buenos Aires, 1904. A review in the American Anthropologist (1905) describes them as "men, women, and children, of various Indian tribes of central South America...the posthumous work of Guido Boggiani, the ethnologist, who fell a victim to some of the savages of the Gran Chaco a year or two ago. The reproductions, excellently done, are on cards, rather larger than postals, with titles in Spanish only...tribes represented are: Sanapani, 1; Angaite, 3; Lengua, 5; belonging to the Maskoi stock. Caduveo (Mbaya), 15; Toba, 1; Payagua, 6; of the Guaicuru stock. Bororo, 4. Chamacoco, 79. This makes altogether a most valuable album for the ethnologist" and that among "the most interesting pictures are a Sanapani Indian with tame parrots, No. 1; a Mbaya with bow and arrow, No. 13; Indian holding a snake, Nos. 42-43; Indian with labret, No. 50; Indian woman carrying infant in net, Nos. 87 and 89; a group of children, Nos. 35a and 35B. There are a number of fine pictures of old men. Tattooing is well represented in Nos. 16-19, 21-24, 77-81, 85, 86, 93, 94."
