Biographical Note

Eli Washington John Lindesmith was born on September 27, 1827 in Center Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. From an early age, he helped support his family. Lindesmith was the oldest of seven children, the youngest three girls were from his mother's second marriage. At age eight, he went to work with a local farmer to contribute to his family's income. In 1849, at age twenty-two, he entered St. Mary's Theological Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1855.

Lindesmith spent his life as a missionary. Once ordained, he served as an itinerant priest throughout Northeastern Ohio. Father Lindesmith travelled to various parishes from Youngstown to Canton and Akron, Ohio, south of Cleveland. His next mission, from 1880 to 1891, allowed Lindesmith to fulfill a life-long desire to serve in the miliary. Lindesmith went west to Montana where he became a Military Chaplain at Fort Keogh. He established a mission among the Crow, Sioux and Cheyenne and served the local white settlers and military personnel. Lindesmith returned to Ohio in 1891 and resumed his missionary work among parishes in Northeast Ohio. He spent the remainder of his life as a chaplain at St. Ann's Orphan Asylum in Cleveland. He died on February 6, 1922.

Lindesmith considered himself a missionary to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. He lectured on the moral reform of society and was a member of several temperance organizations like the Catholic Prohibition League. His lectures on temperance had a broad ecumenical appeal, bringing in Protestant as well as Catholics to hear him speak. He commented on his time and gathered information on a variety of topics from sin, marriage, health and medicines, to Irish Nationalism and cowboys. He produced a large wealth of religious notes and preserved his sermons throughout his priesthood.

Lindesmith proudly served as a military chaplain and recorded his family's long service in the United States Military. He held memberships in the Sons of the American Revolution and War of 1812 Societies. His patriotism for his country was only rivaled by his strong belief in the Catholic Church and its missions in America. He donated money to various Catholic education institutions, the mission to Negroes and other Catholic social programs.

Lindesmith was mindful of history and he carefully recorded and commented on his experiences in the West and in Ohio. He gathered artifacts from Montana. He also maintained a diary throughout his adult life. He kept his own personal accounts of his parish records and his sermons since his days in the seminary, as well as notes on religious matters. Lindesmith wished to preserve a written and visual record of his life and his times.

Scope and Contents

The Lindesmith Papers are divided into ten series: Personal Papers, Diaries, Correspondence, Sermons and Religious Notes, Financial Records, Personal Memorabilia, Photographic Materials, Military Records, Books and Printed Materials, and Parish Records. Lindesmith gathered and constructed much of his papers to send to Catholic University after he had become chaplain at St. Ann's Orphan Asylum. He sent his papers and artifacts to Catholic University's Museum from 1910 to 1922 in a series of installments.

Lindesmith's Personal Papers consist mainly of family histories and drafts of his autobiography he constructed while chaplain of St. Ann's Orphan Asylum in Cleveland. His correspondence is arranged primarily by year, though there is some arrangement by subject. Lindesmith's diaries span his adult life and provide commentary on his priesthood and record of his missionary experiences. Lindesmith preserved his sermons from his days in the seminary to the end of his life in Cleveland (1846-1920) and they are organized by year. The financial records consist mainly of bank records and receipts from 1880 to 1922, and account books from his priesthood. There are two files relating to Lindesmith's will and burial monument. The Personal Memorabilia and Printed Material represent a wide variety of Lindesmith's interests. The Photographic materials consist mainly of photographs and drawings from Montana, images of Popes and Bishops, and a few family albums with descriptions. Lindesmith's Military records mainly consists of correspondence regarding his appointment and retirement, notes on Fort Keogh and Miles City, and records of his missions as Military Chaplain. Lindesmith retained personal copies of parish records.

Several books have been removed from the collection and sent to Rare Books. See the Anthropology collection for a listing of artifacts Lindesmith donated to the Museum.
