The McCarthy papers are dived into two series.
The first series has personal papers consisting of what are apparently his graduate student notes from his years in Philadelphia, 1893-1898, working on his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.
The second and more complicated series is an assemblage of his various professional papers. These include his correspondence, draft manuscripts of a mix of articles and lectures, manuscript and galleys for his book on Lincoln's Plan of Reconstruction, original documents he collected while doing research, his book reviews and published articles, other publications and printed materials, and clippings. The last part of this series also has a collection of material related to Connecticut Catholic historian James A. Rooney.
