Historical Note

The Thomas More Society of America (TMSOA) is a non-denominational, non-profit organization that promotes interest in the life and works of Sir Thomas More relevant to contemporary issues of moral, religious, political, and philosophical significance. More, a native of London and son of a high court judge, was an internationally recognized intellectual and immortalized in literature and stage as "A Man for All Seasons." His talent and ability prompted a varied career as a lawyer, diplomat, scholar, High Steward of Oxford and Cambridge, Royal Councilor, Speaker of Parliament, and Chancellor of England. Unfortunately, he famously defied his master, King Henry VIII of England, over papal rights, and lost his head for his trouble. The Society believes that the issues More faced are still familiar in the present, and include privacy rights, personal freedom, and public responsibility.

The Society was founded as a working group in 1977 (incorporated in 1979) by Howard T. Markey, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals in Washington, D.C. The original incorporators were Joseph Crumlish, John D. Lane, and Thomas H. Wall. Through its forums, programs, and activities, the Society acquaints its members and others with views espoused by More in both his public and private life. They confer regularly with scholars, lawyers, judges, and other public figures. Scholarly papers are disseminated to members through their pubilcations such as the newsletter and 'The Thomas More Gazette.' Mary Ellen Bork, wife of controversial Supreme Court nominee, Robert Bork, was president 1985-1987.

The Society's annual dinner has an impressive list of past speakers, including Supreme Court justices Antonin Scalia (1995) and Clarence Thomas (1997); former federal government officials William Bennett (1986), Lynn Chaney (1988) and Louis Freeh (2000); journalists Michael Novak (1993) and Robert Novak (2003); and Catholic University presidents William Byron, S.J. (1983), Edmund Pellegrino (1996), and John Garvey (2011).

Scope and Contents

Organized into six series the records consist primarily of files of past presidents James Keenan (1988-1989), Joseph Spaniol, Jr. (1991-1992), and Sister Ann O'Donnell (2011-2012). Files specific to Spaniol and O'Donnell are so indicated in the file note fields.

The first series is Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, 1979-2008, in box 1. It has various versions of the articles of incorporation and bylaws.

The second series is Board of Directors' Minutes and Related Material, 1977-2010, in boxes 1-2. This comprises board minutes, correspondence, notices, financial reports, and other related material.

The third series is Correspondence and Other Papers, 1981-2013, and undated, in boxes 2-3. This has primarily general correspondence, plus various attached material, filed chronologically.

The fourth series is Subject Files, A-Z, 1966(1980-2013)n.d., in boxes 3-4. This includes files on the annual meetings and their featured speakers as well as financial reports, membership lists, scholarships, and website development. Of particular note is material on a proposed 2012 letter to U.S. President Barack Obama in opposition to the health care mandates regarding religious institutions.

The fifth series is Audiovisual Materials, 1981-1987, 1998-2003, and undated, in box 5. This has a container of seven 3.5 inch floppy computer disks and a folder of photographs and negatives. The former is focused on the period of 1998-2003 with material apparently duplicating paper records in the collection such as the Board of Directors minutes and the newsletter. The photographs and negatives appear to be mostly of public events from the 1980s with very little identification of people, places, and dates.

The sixth and last series is Publications, 1979-2007, and undated, in box 5. This has society produced publications (proofs and finished versions) including brochures, the newsletter/chronicle, 'Moreana' (in French), and the 'Thomas More Gazette.' There is also some related correspondence present.
